Living Room Furniture

Before choosing a TV unit, sofa or center table, check whether there will still be enough room to walk, sit comfortably and use the room every day. This makes the room feel comfortable and relaxes the mind too.

A large sofa can leave little space for a center table. A full-wall TV unit can take up storage space without giving you enough closed cabinets. Too many open shelves can mean that books, wires, toys and everyday items are always visible.

We look at these things first.

Great Space designs and builds TV units, center tables, sofas, chairs, display units and room dividers based on the actual room.

The furniture shown on this page is from completed Great Space projects. The same design does not have to be copied into another home.

Start With the Space You Have

1

Leave Enough Space to Walk

Place the sofa, chairs and center table before deciding their final sizes. People should be able to enter the room, reach the seating and move between furniture without squeezing through narrow gaps. A larger piece is not always the better choice.

2

Decide Where the TV Will Go

The TV position affects the sofa position. The television should be comfortable to watch from the main seats. After that, the TV unit can be sized for the wall and the storage you need. This is easier than choosing a TV unit first and trying to arrange the room around it later.

3

Decide What Needs to Be Stored

Think about what normally stays in the living room:

  • remote controls
  • cables and chargers
  • books
  • toys
  • documents
  • Wi-Fi equipment
  • game consoles
  • items you want to display

Things used often can have easy-to-reach storage. Things you do not want to see every day can go behind shutters or drawers. Open shelves can then be kept for a smaller number of books, plants, photographs or decorative pieces.

4

Choose the Main Furniture Before the Small Details

Start with the sofa, TV unit and center table. Then decide the rug, curtains, cushions, lights and decorative pieces. This gives you fewer decisions to make at one time and makes it easier to see what the room still needs.

TV Units

Start with the television position and available wall width.

Then decide how much storage is actually needed.

If you have cables, remotes, routers or other equipment around the television, closed cabinets help keep them out of sight.

Open shelves can be added for the things you want to show.

The entire wall does not have to be filled.

Great Space TV units are made in finishes such as laminate and wood veneer. Depending on the project, they may also include wall panelling, drawers, shutters or display shelves.

Center Tables

Choose the center table after the sofa position is clear.

The main question is not whether a round, square or rectangular table looks better.

It is whether people can comfortably walk around it.

A compact room may work better with a smaller or round table. A larger seating area may have enough space for a wider table.

A lower shelf or drawer can also be useful when you regularly keep remotes, books or other small items near the sofa.

Sofas and Seating

Start with the number of people who normally use the room.

Then consider guests.

A large sectional sofa gives more continuous seating, but it also uses more floor space.

In some rooms, a smaller sofa with one or two separate chairs gives you more ways to arrange the seating.

Material depends on how the sofa will be used.

Leather and leatherette are easier to wipe clean.

Fabric and velvet give you more choices in colour and texture but usually need more regular cleaning.

You also do not need to make the sofa, curtains, TV unit and center table the same colour.

Choose a few colours or wood finishes and repeat them where needed.

Display and Room-Divider Units

A divider can help when the living room opens directly into the dining area, hallway or entrance.

It can separate the two areas without building another wall.

Common options include:

  • wooden slats
  • glass
  • open shelves
  • display niches
  • a mix of open and closed storage

If you already have many books or decorative items, adding more open shelves may not solve the storage problem.

Some of those items may be better kept inside closed cabinets.

Leave some shelves partly empty instead of filling every available space.

If the divider includes lights or connects to the false ceiling, decide it early. The electrical points, ceiling and furniture can then be planned together.

If the Room Looks Too Full

Before buying another cabinet or shelf, find out what is making the room look full.

If everyday items are visible:
Add closed storage.

If every shelf is occupied:
Keep fewer items on display.

If furniture blocks movement:
Change the layout or use smaller pieces.

If there are too many different colours:
Choose a smaller group of colours and repeat them.

If you do not know what to remove:
Start with the things you rarely use or do not need to see every day.

The answer is not always more furniture.

Sometimes it is better storage or less furniture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Check how much of the storage is open.

Books, boxes, cables, toys and decorative pieces can make a room look full when most of them remain visible.

Use closed cabinets for everyday items and keep open shelves for a smaller number of things you want to show.
