Kochi gets about 3,000 mm of rain a year, spread over roughly 124 rainy days, according to Kochi’s climate records. June alone averages about 700 mm.
In July and August, average relative humidity climbs to about 83%.
Your wardrobes, kitchen units and bathroom vanities live in that air for years.
So choosing an interior designer in Kochi is about more than how your home looks on handover day. It’s about how it holds up in the first monsoon, and the tenth.
The good news is that a few simple checks make the choice easy. Start with completed work, then compare what each company puts in writing.
A portfolio is a great place to begin. It shows taste, finish quality and the kind of homes a company has done.
But it isn’t the only deciding factor, because two companies with equally good photographs can send you very different estimates.
We’ll use Great Space Interiors as the worked example. It’s a residential interior company based in Vyttila, Kochi, working on flats and houses, and it can design for homes in Vyttila, Edappally and across Kochi.
Its figures reflect its standard estimate terms as of September 2026.
The 10 checks
- Completed work that matches your home
- What the estimate includes
- Materials in writing, with brand and grade
- The drawings you approve before production
- Who manages your project, and how fast they respond
- The delivery time, and planning around the rains
- What happens at handover
- What the warranty covers
- How the interiors are made and installed
- How the work handles Kochi’s climate
1. Look at completed work that matches your home
A portfolio shows taste, finish quality and the type of homes a company works on. It’s a good place to start.
Look for a completed flat or house similar to yours. Go beyond a few photographs. Full projects, with different rooms from the same home, tell you much more.
Great Space’s completed residential projects are on its our works page.
A portfolio shows the result. The next checks show how you get there, what’s included and what stands behind it.
2. Check what the estimate includes
A good estimate tells you exactly what you’re getting.
Great Space’s estimate does this in writing. It covers 2D and 3D designing as per the agreed scope, furniture production, delivery to your site, installation and more.
So you can see your full picture before you decide.
Two quotations that differ by lakhs are often pricing different scopes.
Ask every company the same question: what exactly is in your price? Ask for the scope in writing, item by item.
Give each one the same floor plan, so the answers can be compared.
3. Ask for materials in writing, with brand and grade
Words like “premium plywood” or “best hardware” don’t tell you much.
A written specification names the material, grade, thickness and brand for each part of the work.
Here’s how Great Space’s estimate lists it:
| Material | Specification | Brand |
| Marine plywood | 18mm laminated BWP-710 (boil water proof), used for modular interiors | Greenply |
| HDHMR | 18mm laminated, used for making shutters | Action TESA / Century |
| WPC | Termite-proof, borer-proof, waterproof and fire-retardant | Thomson / Apollo |
| Hinges | Zinc-coated soft close | Hettich |
| Kitchen accessories | Premium soft and auto close | Hettich Premium |
| Kitchen appliances | Hood, hob, built-in oven | Faber |
| Laminates | Glossy and matt finish | Merino / Green Lam |
| Edge band | All cabinet carcasses and shutters | Rehau |
The exact specification can vary with the approved project.
Keep the approved version with your papers, so you can check delivered items against it.
Why BWP-710 marine plywood suits a Kochi home
The 710 refers to IS 710, the Indian standard for marine plywood. BWP stands for boiling water proof.
It’s bonded with a boiling-water-proof grade of synthetic resin, where moisture-resistant grades use urea-based glues.
The standard requires the boards to hold their bond after 72 hours in boiling water. That’s a far harsher test than any Kochi monsoon.
Greenply says its 710 marine plywood is IS 710 certified, made with BWP grade resin, and preservative treated against termites, borers and fungi.
BIS publishes a product certification manual for IS 710, so you can ask any supplier for certification details.
With humidity averaging about 83% in July and August, that’s a real advantage in kitchen sink units, bathroom vanities, and wardrobes in rooms that stay closed through the monsoon.
It generally costs more than ordinary plywood, and that’s exactly why the grade should be written down. Once laminate is fitted, you can’t see what’s behind it.
Even marine grade likes a dry base, so wipe up spills and fix leaks early.
Hardware deserves a question too
Kochi is a coastal city, and Kerala interior guides note that salt in the air can speed up corrosion of metal fittings.
Ask which hinges, channels and handles a company uses, and what finish they have.
Great Space’s estimate lists zinc-coated soft close hinges from Hettich.
4. Know which drawings you approve before production starts
You should see and approve drawings before anything is made, and know what each one is for.
Great Space’s procedure runs in this order:
- Initial site inspection
- Layout planning from accurate site dimensions
- Detailed 2D drawings
- Selection of finishes, colours and materials as per the final drawing
- 3D views to help you picture the colour schemes
The estimate is then updated to match the finalised 2D drawings and specification.
Manufacturing follows once you’re happy.
The 2D drawings matter most, because production and installation follow them.
Ask every company which drawings you’ll receive, and when the final estimate is fixed.
5. Check who manages your project, and how fast they respond
Who manages your project
Before you say yes, ask who your contact will be, and where you’ll see progress.
At Great Space, you get a dedicated designer and a shared WhatsApp group. It includes the sales contact, the designer and the CEO.
Drawings and updates go into that one group, so everyone sees the same information.
How fast they respond
Response time before you sign is a good preview of response time after you sign.
Great Space calls within 5 minutes of an enquiry during working hours.
On that call it notes your site status, location, requirements and floor plan.
The estimate follows within 30 minutes, or within an hour once you’ve shared the floor plan. There’s a follow-up the next day.
You can test this yourself. Send the same enquiry to each company on your shortlist, and see who calls, who asks about your site and who sends a written estimate.
6. Understand the delivery time, and plan around the rains
A delivery date is only useful when you can trust it.
Great Space quotes 45 working days, and your estimate confirms the schedule for your project.
When you compare companies, ask how each one counts its timeline, so you’re comparing like with like.
Plan around the rains
Rain is heavy in Kochi from June to September, and it continues, lighter, from October to December.
Paint manufacturers note that monsoon humidity can double the time paint needs between coats. Indigo Paints puts normal drying at 4 to 6 hours.
A good schedule plans for this. Ask any company how it handles the rains, and keep a small buffer before you fix your move-in date.
7. Ask what happens at handover
Handover is the moment your home becomes yours, so it’s worth knowing how it works.
Great Space finishes each project with a complete site cleaning and a formal handover to you.
You get a schedule once the final drawings are confirmed, and you know the handover date ahead of time.
When the day comes, walk through the finished home with the team. Check the installed units, shutters, drawers and finishes against your approved drawings and specification.
Ask every company what its handover includes.
8. Read the warranty for what it covers, not the number of years
A long warranty helps most when the terms are clear.
Great Space gives 10 years against manufacturing defects on the carcass, shutters and panels it makes and supplies.
It also gives lifetime service, with the first year free.
Other items are covered as well:
- Electrical and plumbing fittings carry 1 year.
- Loose furniture and soft furnishings carry 1 year.
- Branded appliances and accessories follow the manufacturer’s warranty, with service handled by the brand under Great Space’s supervision.
- Hettich accessories carry a 10-year replacement warranty for mechanical and manufacturing defects.
Great Space’s warranty terms are written out clearly, so you know what each item carries.
In a city with Kochi’s rainfall, clear terms matter as much as the number of years. Ask every company for its warranty in writing, item by item.
9. Ask how your interiors are made and installed
Ask whether design, production and installation are done by the company’s own teams. That makes it easy to know who to talk to at every stage.
Great Space designs, manufactures and installs with its own in-house teams.
Its factory is equipped with German machinery and precision production software.
Manufactured materials are delivered to site after quality checks, and installation is done by its own team as per the detailed 2D.
If a company offers, ask to see its factory or a project in progress.
10. Check how the work handles Kochi’s climate
Kochi has a tropical monsoon climate. Temperatures stay between about 23 and 31 °C through the year, and humidity is high for much of it.
That puts three things to the test: wood, metal and airflow.
Moisture and wood. Ask which materials go near the kitchen sink and inside bathroom units, and how the edges are sealed.
Pests. Great Space’s care guide suggests pest control every 6 months, especially in laterite stone structures, which are prone to termite attacks.
Homes that stay closed. The care guide also advises against leaving a home unoccupied for more than 3 weeks in damp conditions, because prolonged moisture can cause fungal issues on cabinets, fabrics and accessories. If you travel often, ask someone to open the flat and let air through.
A few easy habits before your first monsoon
- Clean units with a soft, clean cloth, and never pour water directly on them.
- Fix any leak from sinks or wash units straight away.
- Open windows on dry days, and use fans to move humid air out.
- Keep your warranty terms and approved specification somewhere easy to find.
Ask any company what it advises for upkeep in Kochi’s weather. A company that has thought about the climate will have a clear answer.
Flats and houses in Vyttila, Edappally and across Kochi
Great Space is based in Vyttila and can design for flats and houses in Vyttila, Edappally and across Kochi.
Have these ready for the first call:
- Your floor plan
- The current stage of the site
- The location
- What you need in each room, such as living, dining, kitchen, bedrooms, wardrobes and study
With the floor plan, Great Space can send an estimate within an hour.
Use the portfolio and the paperwork together, and give every shortlisted company the same floor plan and the same questions. You’ll choose with confidence.
Frequently asked questions
How can I check what plywood is inside my cabinets?
Great Space names it in your estimate: 18mm laminated BWP-710 Greenply for modular interiors.
Keep that specification and compare it with what’s delivered.
You can also ask to see the boards before they’re fitted, and ask the supplier for BIS certification details.
Is the monsoon a bad time to start interior work in Kochi?
Not at all.
Design and drawings can start at any time, and a good schedule plans for the rains.
Ask about a buffer for painting, since humid weather slows drying.
Will my apartment association allow interior work?
Most associations have rules on work timings and lift use, so check yours early.
It’s a quick conversation that keeps everything smooth, whether your apartment is in Vyttila, Edappally or elsewhere in Kochi.
Should I leave my flat shut while I’m away during the monsoon?
Try not to leave it shut for long.
Great Space’s care guide advises against leaving a home unoccupied for more than 3 weeks in damp conditions.
Ask someone to open the flat and let air through, and arrange periodic cleaning.
Who do I call if something needs attention after handover?
Great Space gives 10 years against manufacturing defects on the carcass, shutters and panels it makes and supplies. Lifetime service is included, with the first year free.
Ask any company for the service contact in writing, and for what its warranty covers, item by item.
Does marine plywood mean it can stay in water?
Marine grade handles moisture and humidity far better than ordinary plywood, which is why it suits Kochi kitchens and bathrooms.
Standing water is a different matter, so keep sink areas dry and fix leaks early.
Great Space’s care guide covers this.
Does Great Space do office or commercial interiors?
No.
Great Space works only on residential interiors, flats and houses.
